I don't really read Sci-fi so I wasn't expecting to enjoy Project Hail Mary so much, let alone whiz through it in 24 hours. I don't know what it is, but the genre has never quite meshed with my tastes (or maybe I haven't given it a fair chance). But I read rave reviews about this book and picked it up on a whim.
Project Hail Mary is my first experience with Weir, and everyone else is right, he does a fabulous job of writing an engaging and funny story. It certainly subverted my expectations of the genre. The science aspect is there (though I can't speak on the accuracy of it) but Weir's writing especially showcases the memorable characters he creates. This book was far more wholesome than I expected and I think that largely played into how much I enjoyed it. Project Hail Mary may be the most pleasant reading surprise I've had, so far, this year.
Maybe now I'll have to finally pick up the unread copy of The Martian that's been sitting on my nightstand for a few years.
