I read The Right Stuff Tom Wolfe's book about the Mercury 7 years ago, back when I was firmly in my space exploration phase. At the time, it didn't even occur to me to look for a book about women astronauts. After all, there were only a few women astronauts, and they'd joined the space program long after it was established, so how many books could there even be?

I'm so glad to learn that I was wrong. I clearly knew very little about women in the space program, because there is absolutely more than enough to write a book about. Grush did a fantastic job of balancing the women's individual stories with the history and context of what was happening in the space program at the time. I had no idea that one of "the Six" was on ill-fated Challenger expedition in 1986.

This was a really fantastic read. I do wish there had been a bit more "heavy" content, focusing on what the women did while in space (since these women were absurdly accomplished on the ground - how did they use these skills in space?) and the training process, since that's also something that I find really interesting. However, this was still a great read and highly recommended for anyone who's interested in space and space travel!
