Tomorrow Land by Mari Mancusi
3.0

Peyton has just emerged from an underground bunker, after waiting for 4 years for the plague that was killing people and turning them into zombies to be finished. Equipped with cybernetic enhancements and razors in her hands, she has to make her way alone to Florida to meet her scientist father at Disney World. She is not even out of town before she meets up with Chris Parker, the guy she had a relationship with before she went underground. With so few people left in the world, Chris and Peyton must cling to each other and work out their problems while they are on the journey...it could just save the world if they make it to their destination.

I have very very mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, ZOMBEHS!!!! One the other hand, I couldn't really get into the head of either main character, and I have a suspicion this is because the book was written in third person. Chapters alternated and went back and forth between the past and the present, but that didn't really bother me too much. What WAS annoying was that the guy kept being referred to as both Chris and Chase. At first I thought they were two different people.

I guess the main problem to me was that some aspects of the plot felt underdeveloped and I ended up with lots of unanswered questions. Some were just tiny things, like, how could Peyton emerge after 4 years underground and not even have the sun bothering her eyes? Some were bigger, such as understanding exactly what caused the "super flu". The twist at the end somewhat explained it but I still didn't feel like it was very clear.

The fight scenes were probably my fave parts, but they passed quickly. The zombies also sounded pretty gross and that was also awesome.

In the end, I guess the combination of flat characters plus a give-and-take plot led me to this three star rating. I don't regret reading this book, I just feel there were several things that could have been improved.
