I was drawn to this book out of boredom. I needed something to listen to, and this was the first audiobook I found. But this was a very very pleasant surprise.

The way the first half of the book unfold is beautiful. It is slow. It is layered. It is intriguing. Reading of Lakshmi's career working for the rich elite of Jaipur fulfilled my desire for drama. The manipulations, the arrangements, the deals, all were amazing. What I liked even more was the questionable nature of her second job. I found the conversation around abortion and contraceptives to be done very well.

What I didn't like was Radha. I did not connect with her character at all. I could not understand her decisions or her naïveté. I wish there was more of her perspective. I think there were other perspectives that the story could have benefitted from as well. I wanted to read Parvathi's thoughts or Kantha's.

I also disliked the ending. All the loose ends were tied. It was too perfect.
