Do yourself a favour and don’t read this book.
And by that, I mean LISTEN to the audiobook instead 😍. Because it’s Jamie Fraser himself! Who doesn’t want to get read to by this perfect gentleman from the 1700s?!
Except he’s not Jamie. He makes it very clear that he’s just Sam. And Sam is actually quite funny and relatable, and i love him for it. In this memoir, he treks the 96-mile length of the West Highland Way, and eventually makes his way into Ben Nevis (UK’s highest mountain). Whilst on this wilderness adventure, he recounts his personal life journey. From his humble beginnings growing up in rural Scotland, to his numerous failed attempts at making it big as an actor, and to finally catching his big break as Jamie Fraser.
It felt like listening to an old friend. I found myself chuckling at some of his goofiness. Case in point: “Snood.. Snooooooood. I’ve no reason to repeat this word. I just like the sound of it.”
“‘What do you say, boys? I asked, addressing the mushrooms clustered over my shoulder, ‘Who’s with me?!’”
You also could not help rooting for him. His grit and drive is inspiring and laudable, and I commend him for showing his vulnerable side. It was such a joy listening to him. Will definitely listen to it again at some point, hopefully when he finds his Sassenach. 🥹
