Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
2.0
What a dark book. First of all, I did not appreciate the way this story was told. The paragraph breaks were so seldom that there may as well have been none. The flow of the story seemed incoherent at times when the narrator would ramble.
I'd like to think that if I were telling a story to my mates, I wouldn't be so speculative about each detail. I'd surely lose them, especially if it were late at night like it was for Marlow.
As for the themes and general idea of this book, I was impressed. Incredibly dark. The ending presented a no win scenario. If Marlow had told the fiancee his true last words, that of course would have been horrific. But, in lying to her, was he not proving the darkness within himself?
