I am afraid this might be Sepetys’ weakest work. The storyline is fairly simple and follows quite a few standard YA plot lines and there was little historical fact embedded into the novel. It was, however, a quick and enjoyable read and I appreciated the insights into the community in the French Quarter in the 1950s. Sepetys creates such loveable and complex characters in a context where people e.g. prostitutes, madams, the lower social-class in general, are often stigmatised and dehumanised.
