One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

5.0

One Hundred Years of Solitude has easily been one of the best books I've read in ages. Once you get over the fact that many of the characters have the same or similar names, it becomes very easy to get into the rhythm of Marquez's expert storytelling. I think "captivating" is a word that is often overused in literary reviews, but for this book it totally encapsulates my experience. Each subtle nod to the book's overall themes, each clever little characterization, each beautiful description of character, time, or place, creates a world that I found it hard to pry myself away from. It's easily landed a spot on my "favorites" shelf, and a high recommendation.
