Finding Me by Viola Davis

5.0

Wow. Just wow. I read/listened to this book/audiobook at the recommendation of my friend, Amanda. The written words are powerful, but hearing them in the author's own voice was even more impactful.

I don't know what I was expecting from this book. I guess I imagined something more along the lines of Michelle Obama's story but with a show business angle. I thought we'd get a history of her work and career detailing how she became famous, but what we got was so much more. We got a glimpse into a life of extreme poverty with no holds barred grit. Davis doesn't shy away from the ugly stuff. She owns it, acknowledging how it shaped her in both positive and negative ways, but moreover she shines as an example courage, forgiveness, and love, especially self-love.

Viola Davis is incredibly strong. To have gone through the things she did, to have overcome the things she did, and to still have the ability to love and hope is a miracle. If nothing else, let this book serve as a reminder:

1. that you never really know what another person is going through, so be kind and spread love.
2. that mental and emotional health is crucial and it is okay to seek help.
3. that what happens to you does not mean that's who you are.
