Breakaway by Avon Gale
4.0

TW: ableist language.

I finally read my first solo written Avon Gale book (I've read her co-written stuff ) and I gotta say i really liked this? The characters are what really made the book for me because i know nada of hockey and barely understood sportswise lol.

So Lane was adorable, goofy, had zerooo filter for his thoughts omg this guy said some things that simultaneously infuriated me annnnd had me cackling. But I still liked him alot! I totally got the other character's frustrations with him sometimes when he would just say anything without thinking about it first? but you know what he felt just like a real awkward person to me and that awkwardness just made me actually like him more lol

And Jared, i loved watching him fall for Lane while clearly wondering how am i in love with this dude??? lol. I just found them together really sweet. The best thing for me about this book was there wasn't really any angst. Listen i love me some angst filled books, but i liked this one too. How there wasn't any major conflict that tore the two apart and they had to figure out how to sort that all out. There was internal conflict with each character but not because of each other. Lane's was sorting through whether he needed to come out to his parents/team as gay and Jared was trying to figure out his place and what he'd do after he retired from playing hockey.

I liked that right away Lane made friends with Zoe. more female friends in m/m books please! And she like Jared, was also bi.

I'm eager to learn more about certain players who are the next couple in book two!!
