The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

5.0

All in all, I'll do my best to speak only in brevity. However, this won't likely happen. To say that Steifvater's story took me by surprise is completely true: I hadn't expected again to find a single book, let alone a series, that I loved within the genre of YA Fiction. However, I find myself, at the end of this series, grateful that I gave it a chance.

Though beautifully written and breathtaking in imagery, what I find I enjoyed most about The Raven Cycle was its characters: how interwoven, like a "constellation", they all are, and how they develop. Stiefvater kept me curious, willing to explore and uncover not only Glendower but the pasts and futures of those searching for him, the band of ragtag adventurers that sprang up around the quest. Ultimately, however cliche, these books are not about finding the Raven King, but about the journey that leads the development of the characters along it: the king was never the goal, but seeing Gansey, Adam, Ronan, Noah, and Blue develop, was.

I feel privileged to have seen them grow.
