I went in to this classic really not knowing anything about it. A friend gifted it to me as it was a favourite classic from her childhood. I really enjoyed it! It reminded me how children’s literature can really tackle deep and even dark topics in a moving way. I particularly loved the character of Dickon—and his mother! I loved how the role—and importance—of parents was explored, especially mothers. Dickon’s mother is such a kind, joy-filled, wise person and you could see her touch and influence rippled through all the children. I also loved how the Magic discussed in the book was tied in to a Christian faith through Dickon reciting the doxology. I think that chapter was my favourite.
The book also tackles issues like Britain’s presence in India during that time period, and the negative/ignorant attitudes some British had towards Indian people. The character growth in Mary and Colin, in particular, was so realistic and enjoyable to read. All in all, I quite enjoyed this classic and I can see why it is considered a classic. 😊
