The Sandman Vol. 11: Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman
5.0
I didn't understand the appeal of Neil Gaiman until I read the first volume of the Sandman comics. To paraphrase a David Mitchell quote from Cloud Atlas, he always seemed to have one eye on the screenplay, and I don't enjoy reading novels with the cadence of a movie. It made his characters feel a bit too 2D, existing only for my perusal, and I just couldn't get into the universe.
That all changed with The Sandman, where I felt like Gaiman's strong will to impose his mind's eye perspective of his story blends seamlessly with the graphic novel art form, and is only enhanced by the variety of artists that make up The Sandman volumes. I couldn't recommend these enough, it's one of those series that can leave you feeling like a different person.
