Life of Pi by Yann Martel
5.0

TL;DR Review: While most people know this book as the story of Pi’s struggle to survive while trapped on a boat with a tiger, it’s truly about so much more. The heart of this story is about choices and faith, what it means to survive and what makes us human.

Content Warnings: Shipwreck, Death, Murder, Cannibalism, Starvation, Animal Death, Blood, Gore.

”The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity; it's envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can.”

Life of Pi is a book that takes its time - it’s very slow paced and deliberate, it takes care and finds purpose in everything. It’s beautifully written, with the plot, characters, and conflicts blending together in such a way that really celebrates the beauty of life. While it can sometimes make scenes drag on, it feels very deliberate, as to Pi, every moment is precious and lead him to the life he has.

What most people know about the book is that Pi becomes trapped on a boat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but the trust is the book is about so much more. At its heart, the story is about life and faith. It’s about the importance of the connections made throughout our lives and examines the drive for survival.

Pi presents his life story straightforward, but with a certain wonder that makes every moment feel full of purpose. It makes it all the more haunting by the end when you are asked: what matters more, the truth or the story itself?

Who is Pi and who is Richard Parker? Their connection and survival together left me with a similar feeling as Pi to their separation. It was almost hollow and I found myself longing for the symbiosis they had grown accustomed to within their boat. There was a certain simplicity and beauty they both found there and like Pi, I found that by forgetting about rescue and instead focusing on how he lead his own survival became more satisfying than anything else could have been.

That’s where the heart of the story lies - out own personal choices and the stories we believe. Like faith, we choose our own walk through life and each moment in it leads us to who we are today. We can choose to grow bitter with all of the hardship we face, or we can strive to survive and be good. We have to choose what to believe.

Do we believe the story with the animals, or the humans?
