Hard Country by Michael McGarrity

5.0

With this book, McGarrity has come into his own. I've always liked his writing and got into this series because of his Kevin Kearney series. The KK series is a police/sheriff's protocol series but McGarrity has never mastered the art of writing detective/mystery books. The police part always left something to be desired. However I loved the series because of the characters and the setting.

With this new series, it's really a saga, McGarrity can concentrate on the writing and not be bothered with the mystery. He really has a knack for writing and makes the characters come alive. This series retroactively documents the Kearney clan right from the beginning of the clan settling in the southwest.

It's a really in depth look and starts with the patriarch John then goes on to his son Patrick and so forth. He describes the pioneer spirit, the hardships and the ups and downs beautifully. If you love books about cowboys, ranching, the southwest and early Americana you'll love this book. In this very long book, he also threw a detective mystery subplot and a couple of war subplots. But like I said, I really just love the characters in this book.

I just finished book #1 and I'm going to be sorry to see the series end.
