The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl
by Issa Rae
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing by Issa Rae. I felt like she was more of telling me a story than can easily be recited instead of an in depth and complicated prose. The book covered culture, nationality, identity, taking benefits of risks, and an insight into the vast differences in experiences of women of color in the U.S. I can personally relate to a lot of what was shared.
I struggled with the structure of the book. It wasn't very linear (which isn't necessarily an issue), but more of struggled to see the connections between chapters. Some stories were more memoir based (somewhat disjointed), and some were more idioms as it relates to the nature of 'awkward blackness.'
Overall, I think Issa Rae is brilliant is just at the beginning of her career.
