“His honesty protocols are hardwired, chickadee. Yours only work when it suits you.” - Jay Kristoff, Likel1k3.

After a month long hiatus I’m back with a review for a sci-fi post apocalyptic Mad-Max-esque book that recently had its sequel announced.

A story set in a cut-throat world impoverished and poisoned with radiation, follows the lives of seventeen year old Eve, her best-friend Lemon, her robot conscience Cricket, her dying grandpa, and her robot dog living in this harsh reality. When she recovers an Android boy on one of her scavenging missions, a whole lot of secrets from her past are revealed along with him. Eve and her gang have to get through much more than harsh landscapes, murderous cyborgs, and hit men on her road to self-discovery and saving those she loves.

What I enjoyed the most about this book was the character of Lemon Fresh, the friendship aspect, and Jay’s efforts to create such interesting and unique slang. The pacing and the action sequences in this book got me flipping the pages although not as fast as I’d like which I’m going to attribute to not fully connecting to the story. I wasn’t moved by the protagonist’s struggles and was more invested in the best friend character and how lifelikes came into existence. The love interest also felt flat and the romance wasn’t as enjoyable as I’d hoped. The blood, the grit, the robots gone wild, the advancements in AI, and the sci-fi bits are what kept me reading. However, when I got to the last few chapters, that’s when the intensity got turned to full blast, which eventually changed my mind about the book and its rating, and definitely has me looking forward to the sequel.

So if the book’s synopsis appeals to you, I’d recommend you pick it up and let me know how you’ve enjoyed it.✨
