The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien
3.0
This is undoubtedly a classic and I owe a lot to this book for its spawning of an entire genre. It was a lot of fun to read but I think my taste in writing style is so different to how it used to be. Tolkein was a visionary, but we stand on the shoulders of giants and I think in certain aspects this book doesn't hold up compared to more contemporary fantasy. Although in certain respects it is far better, and this was a delight to read.
