The Good Lord Bird
by James McBride
I didn't love this book when I started it, but about halfway through I began really enjoying it, and in the end I was fascinated with the depiction of abolitionist fighter John Brown through the eyes of 14 year old Henry, aka Onion, a black boy living as a girl among Brown's army. It's always good to find a book that sparks interest in further learning. What did I know about John Brown before reading this novel? Uh, he was an abolitionist. Uh, something something, Harper's Ferry. That's it! This book is full of adventure and humor, which is a different, almost joyous way of approaching a historical novel about slavery and the pre Civil War abolitionist movement.
