The Prince
by Niccolò Machiavelli
Is it better to be feared or loved? Machiavelli discards moral code (though is sure to denounce hatred), so long as the State is united under the Prince's rule. It casts doubt on hereditary rule, and gives advantageous rule to those leaders who can start anew, change with the times without relying solely on fortune, and learn from the past victories and defeats of predecessors. A book for every politician wishing to maintain power, though one may not want to bring attention to its place on the book shelf.
