Heart and Brain: Gut Instincts by Nick Seluk

4.0

Grabbed a copy of this at BookExpo or something last year and finally got around to reading it. It's super cute! This collection of comics follows the adventures of personified organs that often act as metaphors for a person's conflicting thoughts and feelings. The main characters are Heart--an impulsive and passionate dreamer always looking for some excitement, and Brain--an anxious overthinker who is preoccupied with important responsibilities. Along the way, they interact with poor, tortured Stomach, food-obsessed Tongue, and other organs from eyes to gallbladder. There is no overarching story, but some similar comics are loosely grouped together.

I love the little motif of Heart's butterfly--a symbol of multiple different aspects of his personality: flighty, hopeful, distractable, beautiful, innocent, delicate. Heart can often been seen joyfully chasing after the butterfly, but it also appears in other, more subtle ways.
