The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez
3.0
I like this author's writing, this was a fast read with lots of heart, and I loved that she tackled such important issues and I loved all the period talk, it was refreshing to have a guy be so normal about it, so I'm definitely going to read the next book in the series. Also, I really liked Josh, Kristen, and Sloan... that ending oof.
That being said, the reason for my rating was even though I liked Josh and Kristen I just couldn't get over the ending (yes, I read the author's note), the fact that Josh saw Kristen as the "Not Like Other Woman" type, the use of death to teach a lesson, and the general lack of communication despite Kristen being a known honest-to-a-fault type of person.
Kristen reminded me so much of Robin from How I Met Your Mother, there was even a discussion of The Naked Man, which was used in the show. And Kristen was the epitome of the "Cool Girl" trope. Ahem, and I quote, "I looked at her, balancing on the balls of her feet off a concrete parking lot divider. She had no makeup on. Sweats. Hair in fucking curlers. Hell, she didn't even change out of the shirt with the enormous lasagna stain on the front before we left the house. And she was a thousand times better than the drop-dead gorgeous yoga instructor from a few hours earlier. Fun. Witty. Smart. Beautiful. The cool girl."
And make no mistake Kirsten is gorgeous too, she just eats pizza and tacos while maintaining her 110-pound frame and quoting Pulp Fiction. This isn't a bad thing, Robin was my favorite character from HIMYM, it's just a trope I've noticed in some of my voracious contemporary romance reading!
Overall, three stars from me.
