Castle Rackrent by Maria Edgeworth

4.0

A fun romp with an amazing unreliable narrator. Edgeworth provides sly commentary on everything from Irish law to social customs such as wakes and Irish slang expressions. Her footnotes are almost postmodern in their self-reference. Edgeworth’s writing is livelier than just about any of her contemporaries. This combination of meta-narrative with humor, progressive social commentary, and an ear for dialogue and story-telling makes Castle Rackrent one of those little gems that are so satisfying to discover.
