The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

5.0

What a strange, lovely book. It wouldn't be for everyone, but if an ounce of you loves horses at all, it might be worth it.

I'm a horse girl, and I have read many horse books. None quite like this. It's got dark, brutal, wild magic - the story of waterhorses twisted into an oddly modern setting. Everything feels like an island you could visit - Stiefvater writes atmospherically, often gorgeously. You won't get a lot of insight into why, I don't think - of the characters, magic, or world. But it feels appropriate.

The pacing is slooow. It takes nearly the whole book to get to the races. Sometimes I wanted it to hurry up. But this is not a plot-driven book. This is meant to explore a modernized fable with fairly relatable, interesting characters.

I wasn't expecting to love it, but I did.
