A Flicker in the Dark
by Stacy Willingham
I feel bad saying it but this book was just kind of boring. I’m looking to get more into thrillers and crime after enjoying those elements in other book genres that I read more frequently. However, this was not a good place to start. The concept was certainly interesting but I should have expected that it would lead to a tumblr-fied angsty main character who communicates almost entirely in cringe, emo dialogue. Her internal thoughts are not much better. This meant that I felt completely unengaged with the stakes relating to this character. Additionally, I found the main plot twist predictable, having suspected it right from the start. I will say that there is a major plot twist at the end which is definitely fun but the book spends so long leaning into a red herring that it feels like a fore gone conclusion for 300 pages. This means the narrative is fun to look back on once you finish the plot twist but is not fun to read. The book would be better served if twists existed throughout the plot but they just don’t. Finally, this book is written by a woman but all of the (few and far between) female characters suffer from ‘written by man syndrome’. I’m sick of constantly having to read about teenage girls boobs and how sexually promiscuous they are. Cut it out.
