Starter Villain
by John Scalzi
I thought this book had a great concept, I loved the first half, and there were many laugh-out-loud moments. A man inherits his estranged uncle's business, which is, presumably, parking garages. After the uncle's funeral (with many flower arrangements carrying sentiments like "Dead? LOL okay."), he learns that the primary business is in selling villain services. The situation gets progressively more absurd as he's swept into a world of volcano lairs, managerial cats, patrol dolphins trying to unionize (who consider the cats to be "class traitors"), and advanced technology that's offered to clients with a subscription fee. His first task is to attend a villain conference where tech bros pitch their business ideas.
The momentum of the plot fizzled for me in the second half though where the jokes started to feel overdone, the characterization too thin, and I wished the author did more with the premise. But I still recommend it if you're looking for lighthearted popcorn sci-fi and love cats.
