The Ardent Swarm
by Yamen Manai
A really short and lovely book that is allegory of imperialism while also literally warning about how global power struggles lead to environmental destruction. I enjoyed the quirky village characters and layering of storylines that all came together in a final conflict. [Spoilers] Sidi's choice to play beekeeper and not God in the end was to me a thoughtful lesson about being a part of nature & rethinking "invasive" species, but really weakened by his choice to also use the killer wasps ad a weapon against men. Book may have been better for me if it was either longer, to give more space for many characters and storylines, or simpler with some of those stories just cut.
