The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo

5.0

This is a really gorgeous book. The story is magical, it's beautifully written but there are underlying themes... it's about more than just a boy who is looking for his sister, an elephant that comes crashing thru the opera house roof dramatically changing lives, it is about love and relationships, loneliness and darkness but also hope and warmth.
I don't think I am in a position to criticize DiCamillo, I think she is wildly talented, but I think this is the book Edward Tulane was intended to be. It's a fable and it's symbolic like that story but it's plot is so much better...more believable & more real. Much more enticing to me anyway. These kinds of stories though sometimes do not seem like they are for children but this is the kind of book I would give to an adult who believes children's literature is beneath them. It lifts up the class of the genre in a way. All that said I am not sure what a child would think of the book and I'm anxiously awaiting to find out.
