Considering this book is based on a true story, with the subject of the holocaust can be quite touch and go at times.
I felt it was well written and focused more of a love story and how to survive the camps. It did feel a little far fetched in areas although an incredible story, I don’t know how they did it the survivors but they did and they just got on with it. Some areas it didn’t feel believable for example the way that Lale and the SS gaurds operated or how Lale just walked off and wasn’t stopped when he was looking for women to go back to the chalet for the Russians. However, we weren’t there so wouldn’t know.
But it was a vivid book, having read The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah before I thought it this book was a little better written just. The Nightingale was a slightly different story and a bit more graphic. You can definitely visualise this book and the story travelling back and forth to through the different regions. Would recommend this book if any asks, just it might quite be what you expect. Did it live up to the hype? I am glad I read it and the recommendation myself.
