The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende
Did not finish book. Stopped at 16%.
I found the author’s choice of words awkward, odd, distasteful, and veering towards offensive, assigning stereotypical behaviors for specific characters. The main character’s reaction towards meeting the presumed future “Japanese lover” and his father when she was a child was described as “nothing like the Chinese she had seen in the illustrations in the Encyclopedia Britannica.” (Pg. 47) I had been looking forward to reading this novel by Isabel Allende and am left sadly disappointed.
