Fingersmith

There is a lot more to this novel than I was expecting. The characters are compelling and the plotting is superb. It’s a shame that the prose isn’t just a little tighter, which would have made the characters more engaging, and I kept being distracted by the peculiar punctuation. I would recommend it to most people as a rollicking good read, though. It’s also very well researched and communicates a real feel of being inside Victorian England.
There’s a large, Dickensian cast, with the kinds of relevant names he uses, and some of the characters are as flat as his, but the central protagonists are more fully rounded than any of his. None of his women are realistic, whereas most of Waters’ women are. Her plot is much more twisty, sensuality more explicit, and emotions less sentimental and more realistic too.
