“The world is the board, Heiress. We just have to keep rolling the dice.”

I’m slowly making my way through this series, and while book one is still my favorite, I have high hopes for book four—SO many people have told me it’s their favorite, so I’m excited to see where it goes!

I decided to listen to The Final Gambit on audio, mostly because I didn’t have a lot of time to sit down and read. I was eager to see where the quirky, lovable characters would go this time around. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be going the audiobook route for the rest of the series. The narrator gave all the characters a much more youthful (and sometimes whiny) tone, which made the book feel more like Young Adult than the previous two installments did.

Looking back, I think the main reason for that shift in tone was the romantic angle added to the story. The love triangle and “first love” vibe seemed to distract from the mystery that originally drew me in. Then pair that with the narration style and it just wasn’t my favorite.

That said, I’m definitely continuing with the series—but next time, I’ll be opting for the print version!
