Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw

2.0

I almost DNF’ed this one.

I would like to warn people to keep google close if you read this book. If you know nothing about Japanese culture/ghost stories then googling is Essential for this one. Lots of Japanese words and no explanation or translation from the author (as footnotes). I got pretty frustrated because I had to constantly interrupt my reading because I had to google words like “yokai” and “fusuma”. Quite frustrating.

Now the story itself, I didn’t like it either. Not to much was explained. 5 friends that don’t even like each other go to a haunted mansion to have a wedding. The mansion is cursed and it’s foundation is resting on bones of a bride who is waiting on her groom. I feel lot of the story is missing and is weirdly paced. I like the idea of the story but the execution didn’t work well. Not to mention the constant use of Japanese words with no explanation. I have no problem about these words but footnotes would’ve greatly helped me.

The author does exceptionally good on describing the mansion, colors etc.
