The Last Kolovsky Playboy by Carol Marinelli

5.0

In the last book, we saw the sole Kolovsky sister, Annika, coming to terms with the emotional abuse she has suffered in the hands of her delinquent mother, with the help of Dr. Ross Wyatt, and finally found her niche in her life, and her profession. The book ended with Aleksi involved in a serious accident, and Ross and Annika marrying in the hospital.

SpoilerWe are introduced to a thirty-six weeks pregnant Kate Taylor, who is a temporary PA to Levander Kolovsky at the head office of the House Of Kolovsky (their fashion business) in Melbourne. His younger half-brother Aleksi, the identical twin of Iosef whom she had already met before, has come from their London offices for a working visit. She cannot explain that in her condition, how could she be feeling attracted to Aleksi. The prologue is at the time when Ivan just came to know of his condition. And then, Kate has her baby, a baby girl, Georgina.

Ivan and Nina Kolovsky are such vile creatures. It is stated even in the beginning of the book. Their emotional torture, impersonal nature, veiled threats about keeping everything hush-hush. What a toll it has taken on all the Kolovsky children. But, it seems Aleksi has suffered the most. As revealed in the last book, did he suffer physical torture? Beatings at his parents' hands? Such a messed up family this is!

On a whim, Aleksi decides to give Kate a visit, hours after she had her baby, and that scene was so cute, you have to read it to believe it.

The story then starts four months after Aleksi's accident. He is on a small island in the West Indies, and after the multiple fractures, his recovery is slow, but he is getting there, both physically and sexually. Ugh...
Kate is now Aleksi's PA, has been her part-time PA for over a year now, what with her daughter, affectionately called Georgie by Aleksi, a five-year-old school going kid. And Aleksi feels she is the perfect choice for his PA since he wouldn't be attracted to her as she is an overweight single mum. Yep, he is an insensitive brute, and the following line proves it:
"Aleksi had thought women lost weight when they gave birth, but Kate seemed to have doubled in size."

Kate rings him up with a horrible news, about his mother, Nina, taking over the running of Kolovskys business, with Zakahr Belenki at his side. Levander, who had stepped in while Aleksi was recuperating, has gone on to adopt a child, older than his own son, his new son, Dimitri, from one of the Detsky Doms, a place where he grew up (I love Levander more!) and his priorities have changed now. Belenki's name strikes fear in Aleksi's mind. His mind, which is grappling with aftereffects of the accident or was it something else, it would seem, with faded memories, which he doesn't want to mention to anybody.

It was fun to read how Georgie adored Aleksi and asked after him. They have a dog too, Bruce, who is mentioned a handful of times. Too intelligent for her age, Georgie is labelled a difficult kid at school for asking too many questions. She doesn't want to go to school, as she doesn't fit in. Time and again, she does think of Aleksi's offer of working full time, since he promised to pay for Georgie's education, and with that she could send her to a school for gifted children. But, she can't bring herself to trust Aleksi as he can change his mind anytime, after all, kids need stability.

The beatings during his childhood, which no one knew about, did such a number on him that he is a light sleeper, stays alert even when he is in pain and should be resting after the accident. Though I couldn't find any details of the accident. Only Ross may have had some inkling, just after his accident, after observing Annika so closely, as to what may have transpired in his childhood. A name, Riminic Ivan Kolovsky, this name is what is bothering him since he was a seven-year-old boy. Had received a beating for, hearing this name. The name of a brother, he chose to forget. For a man always so in control of his life, it must be frightening to admit that he was forgetting things.

They have spent the night together, thrice, not together together, with just two kisses in between. Nina had chosen his doctor, and Aleksi and Kate, to the point of paranoia, think that she may be in cahoots with the doctor. As the heavy medication has been taking after the accident is making him forget things, small things, as well as important things. It's sweet that in spite of not wanting to, it's only Kate he trusts.
But, his twisted father did teach him "Trust No One" and as Kate was getting a closure from her post, Aleksi stopped trusting her.

Their relationship, working or personal, or whatever, is very strange. Without ever being physical, they are so intimate. And he cares for Georgie, as soon as he hears that she is bullied in school, he writes a humungous amount on a cheque, to cover her fees at the school for gifted children.

This was definitely a first, an alpha hero of HPLand who is a fashion designer! It was amusing to read about the Kolovsky 'new member introduction' family dinner. It always is...Aleksi and Annika were always close, more than he was with his twin brother. He was proud of Annika, of how stronger she grew each day, grew out of her shadow of emotional abuse at the hands of their mother with Ross backing her. Aleksi has his heart in the right place, as after a telling off from Annika, he thinks, really thinks, about the way he may hurt Kate and Georgie when this charade would be over.

Georgie is such an adorable kid, asking just the right questions in her innocence...Haha!

I don't know how Zakahr Belenki fits into the Kolovsky clan, his is the next book, then will Aleksi be the last Kolovsky Playboy? Yes, he is, as he is the youngest. Almost halfway through the book, the reasons for Aleksi's beatings are revealed. He came to know about another son of Ivan and Nina, this time, their eldest, Riminic Ivan Kolovsky. And Zakahr Belenki is the same, I guess. This is the murkiest of all the books. You will just hate the Kolovsky parents. For what they put all their kids through. And then came the whole reveal. It set the premise for the fifth book.

The ending was so sweet. Especially the way he talked to Georgie.
"Back to his krasavitsa." Oooh...and I'm swooning now!
