Force of Nature by Jane Harper

"Is Alice here? Did she make it? Is she safe?"

The follow up novel to Jane Harper's, The Dry featuring Australian Federal Police Aaron Falk. The story follows Falk and his partner, Carmen as they help local Police search for Alice Russell, a missing bushwalker. Alice is the key witness Falk's case against her current employer. On a corporate retreat in the Giralang Ranges, five women set out but only four come back. What happened to Alice? Is she lost, victim to a serial killer or something much worse?

While this is a sequel, you dont strictly need to have read the first one, although it will no doubt help you to connect and understand the character of Aaron better as the first book focused more heavily on his history.

The book is told from various points of view. We see Falk and Carmen's investigation in the present as well as flashbacks over several days of the women's journey and the events leading up to the moment they returned without Alice.

The best part of this book for me was the setting. The harsh unforgiving bushland where exposure to the elements, starvation and dehydration are real threats. It was easy to picture the women out there, isolated, fear and panic setting in. The imagery of the Australian bushland was what made this book for me.

None of the employees were particularly likeable and all had their own challenges and problems which helped to make you wonder about each person's motives and secrets.

I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to Alice. Is she just lost or did something happen to her? Did the others know that she was planning to turn against them? Or was there something more going on?

The book was easy to read, paced well and the overall mystery and suspense kept me interested. I felt a little let down by the ending as I was expecting something more wowing but it all tied up and was satisfying.

Overall it was an enjoyable read. Id read more in this series or other books by this author.
