I’ve enjoyed Anne Helen Peterson’s writing on the internet for quite awhile and was psyched for this book! It’s a solid look at burnout and the systems that create it. Peterson showcases the systemic issues and uses a relatively intersectional lens in her approach.

She packs in a lot of anecdotes from millennials to make her case, which are interesting but it makes the read feel choppy and disconnected as we jump from one person to the next, paragraph after paragraph, never revisiting these people or their situations in greater depth. The presentation of them is clunky and awkward too, with “Sarah, who is white...” each time.

Overall, I found myself nodding at a ton of lines in here. Parts of it definitely resonated. But unfortunately it was just... boring. Not terribly engaging. It felt like homework to read. I’m glad Peterson is calling attention to the issue of burnout, though!
