The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

5.0

It's with no hesitation that I give five stars to this book. I read it once before, very long ago. I must have been in middle school, or maybe in my first year of high school. My cousin gave me his copy--I'd never heard of it before. And I really don't think I understood this book much when I read it. Which is probably why it had such a huge impact on me. I was just as confused as Charlie. I feel like my grasp on sex, sexual abuse, drugs, suicide--it was all very foggy at the time. And while I'm sure it made uncomfortable to read about such things, there were so many other bits in the book--probably all the "infinite" stuff--that really, really struck me as beautiful.

I wanted to reread Perks for a number of reasons. I wanted it freshly under my belt for when the Emma Watson movie comes out. I also have been seeing quotes from it all over tumblr recently, and seeing as my memory is shot to hell, I found I couldn't remember any of the main plot lines. Which is the best. Because it was kind of like I got to read this for the first time again. I knew someone awful was lurking in there, but I couldn't remember what and then bam.

And of course, at twenty, I understand this book so much more. And the writing. Holy shit, the writing is just so damn good. I devoured this in under twenty-four hours. And I rarely do this. But it's so easy to do with this book. It almost demands to be read in one go.

So anyway, this book deserves all the hype and I hope I forget it again soon so I can read it anew in six or seven years.

Also there's a really awesome playlist of Charlie's mixtape on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9F9C694B187DE785
