K-Block by T.G. Frost

4.0

Creepy, mysterious and thrilling prison horror.

I haven't read many stories where it takes place in a prison so when I read the synopsis for this, I was excited to try it out. It's about a "wing" of a prison called K-Block where a few prisoners are selected to stay and to go through "treatments". They believe their nightmares are being harvested..if so, why? What can they do?

I liked this book a lot. It was way more of a thriller/mystery than I was expecting. It had quite a few creepy side characters (the staff) and a comical protagonist. This has elements of body horror, trauma and revenge that are always winners in my book. The author did a great job with describing the over sterilized empty setting that the characters are trying to survive in and the friendship felt genuine between the cast. It was really enjoyable to read how each person would react to a situation. I surprisingly found myself attached to the characters and their stories.

I think I was hoping for more wild horror scenes. There were a couple that were great but I was wanting more of those moments. The pacing was a little off at different parts of the book but the action in it made me feel like it was a blockbuster film--a lot of fun! I really liked how it ended and if a sequel comes out, I definitely plan on reading it. If you don't like open ended endings, then you might not fully like this one but it worked perfectly for me.

For me it had similar vibes/elements as Stranger Things, The Boondock Saints, The Walking Dead, Day of the Dead and Jacob's Ladder.

I recommend this to people who like elements of horror, action, thriller, survival and supernatural.
