Is it possible for a story to feel like there is not enough going on while at the same time too much is going on? That’s how I’m feeling about this one. I think the speeches of King Henry really stand out, his use of language (as also seen in Henry IV 1 and 2) show he is able to be a total chameleon to any situation. Even his awkward wooing of princess Katherine at the end is just another example of Henry/Shakespeare using language as a playground. Mistresses Quickly’s wonderful and heartfelt memorial in Act 2 also stands out, along with the many choruses at the start of each act. However, besides Henry, Quickly, and the choruses, I feel the rest of the characters and plot points amount to not much of anything and the English patriotism does not feel earnest, rather it feels more empty.
