The Shadow Land
by Elizabeth Kostova
This was almost a DNR at 60% for me. Also probably closer to a 3.5.
The Historian is one of my favorite books, so I was very excited for this new release.
This book covers a topic I have not read much about, the Communist take over of Bulgaria, and is beautifully written. The protagonists travel all over Bulgaria and that is described so perfectly.
But this book is really bogged down by an insufferable main character, a blundering American in a foreign country who says some of the dumbest things, and serious bloat about halfway through.
I'm glad I finished as the ending really made up for the dragging middle and silly main character.
Also, I would die for Bobby ❤️❤️❤️
