I like this book mostly because of how I found it - in a used bookstore in Rome, one of 3 novels in English in the whole store. It just so happens that there is one page that is in fact set in Rome, what a tidy coincidence. This book doesn't play by the rules. It's erratic and wandering, with the climax not taking place until the very end of the book. Thankfully I didn't read the back cover, since that would have given away the climax, which was truly something you want to be surprised by. It's full of existential angst, impressive prose, and bizarre people/events. Artful and a bit disorienting.
