If you enjoy true crime, then this ones for you.
Before reading this book I had never heard of Israel Keyes, hell it was never brought up in any of my seminars in my Criminology bachelors. It was always the same famous and prolific serial killers such as Bundy, Dahmer, Gein and Ramirez but nothing on Keyes.
A bit of background: Israel Keyes lived in Alaska but he had victims all over the US. He grew up in a mormon family turned white supremacist. His parents had kids and decided that the kids should grow up in the woods, without running water or electricity, away from civilization. Keyes from a very young age learned what it means to be different and not fitting in. As he was forced to adopt the lifestyle of his parents, he missed out on tv programmes, on pop culture knowledge, eating cereal and having fancy gadgets, clothes and having a life like every other normal kid. Instead he was taught how to hunt, how to survive. He was incredibly clever and taught himself how to use guns, assemble them and tear them apart, make his own combinations and he was fast. When he signed up for the army, his sergeant was blown away with Keye’s aim and ability to assemble a weapon so fast. He was also very lethal. All this time spent in the woods hunting animals as a kid, taught him how to be quiet, how to follow someone without being detected. He was also a serial killer, one who was not afraid to cross border lines, travel from state to state and kill without mercy. He is one of the most calculated and organized serial killers I have ever read about and its a shame that you cant find a lot of information on his crimes.
His downfall started when a girl went missing in Alaska. Upon investigation the police found her workplace’s cctv footage. What they saw was confusing but also terrifying. Things are starting to happen immediately after this. Bizarre things. We don't know who we can trust and who we don't in this story. The police does not have any leads. They don't know what to look for and who to look for. The FBI gets involved when polaroid photos of the missing girl turn up in a backpack in a park and a note asking for ransom.
Callahan follows the hunt for the suspected abductor from Alaska all the way to mainland Texas. What it is described is a terrifying account of an incredibly clever serial killer who got caught because of an impulse. The interrogation part is the most interesting part as we get to learn of some of the crimes he committed in detail. However, I felt infuriated with the way Keyes acted. He didn't want to disclose all of his crimes, he asked for the death penalty straight away and to be executed as fast as possible and he would just not talk. The FBI suspects that he could have killed at least 100 people in his ‘career’ but then again they are not sure. It is believed that his crimes go back to 1996. He was able to avoid detection for so many years because he was able to calculate his every move. Burying kill kits all around the US, using maps and not any satellite navigation systems, he is one of the most organized serial killers.
While he was an organized serial killer, he did not fit the profiling criteria of the FBI. He killed far from home, in different states, his victims' ages varied and he did not have a preference to male or female. He would kill, rape, torture and made sure that his victims were never found. He didn't return to his crime scenes and did everything in his power to avoid detection.
I believe that this is a very well researched and written book on Israel Keyes, his life, crimes and the investigation and unfortunately it is the only of its kind out there. I believe that it is a must read for any true crime junkie out there for the valuable information and insight it provides.
