My two issues with this book - it's sexist (I'm choosing to frame that as Narnia Father Christmas being scared of women's power), it treats trusting the wrong person as a moral failing.
But
I wish authors would still write like this for children! It has the magic of a fairy tale and the hard words are exotic not "hard", kids can use a dictionary like I did! This is a beautiful world full of so much magic with kids who will quietly be going through it behind the scenes (evacuees) but still have time for wonder. Even the Professor isn't a grown up in the boring sense. It felt like being wrapped up in the cuddle of a big fur coat! It also touches on grief.
