Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Content Warning for this book - there is some sexual assault of an unconscious/drugged/haunted(?) woman that is kind of brutal to read as a sexual assault survivor. The main character is a wonderfully self-assured woman who really holds her own in the realm of 1950's sexism and I honestly hate how she then must be "punished" for that by being sexually-assaulted. Aren't we past this old trope? But here we are, still punishing our brave women heroes. Unnecessary sexual assault aside, it is a great story, full of rich imagery and a strange twist at the end, but proceed at your own risk.
