vanessakm 's review for:
From Potter's Field
by Patricia Cornwell
The first two books in this series were so good in a haute popcorn suspense kind of way that I kept reading this series long after it deteriorated in quality, the seeds of which were as early as book #3 although I still kind of liked that book. I can't believe I read all the way to #6 before I gave up.
I'm not going to make a laundry list of complaints because they are essentially the same as everyone else's. They boil down to too much reliance on the omniscient boogie man Temple Gault, too many coincidences/ludicrous plot twists and too much lugubriousness for lack of knowing what else to write about. I like a gloomy protagonist but not uninspired writing. If you are friends with or related to Kay Scarpetta, you are going either going to die horribly or see your career and personal life shit-canned. Or in some cases, both.
Neither this nor the Kathy Reichs series about a female medical examiner (both started around the same time) are any great shakes sadly, although the Reichs books are better.
