The entire book is a set-up for a “big reveal” you know about all along…. Because it’s listed on the back cover. Some YA books can hold an adult audience… I’m not sure this is one of them. What differentiates it from other Oz retellings is the sheer amount of gore and horror. Don’t read if you can’t stomach graphic violence. The forced “enemies to lovers” romance trope is slapdash and unnecessary, and the constant repetition of “don’t trust anyone” is tiresome and makes it difficult to commit to any of the characters. Moderate: Confinement
