Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
4.0

Heart wrenching. Beyond the story of Solomon Northrup, a free man kidnapped into slavery, it tells a story of the American culture of slavery, and how the institution itself permeated into nearly every aspect of life, the reverberations of which continue to this day. The more I learn, the more it clear it becomes that slavery is what built the United States and how the vestiges of it remain today, long after the lives of so many were given to this nation.
