I expected a book titled “Assistant to the Villain” to have more villainy. This wasn’t shown to be a YA book, but it definitely reads as YA.
The interactions between the characters is very high school, but the subject matter is not. There is clear sexual innuendo and violence that doesn’t belong in a YA book. Everything else though feels YA.
The book also had a tone shift in the first couple of chapters. The initial two or three chapters feels like an adult book (as in written for an adult audience). After the initial introduction of the story, the YA writing takes over.
The book has decent works building and I love the concept of the story. Even though I did like some elements and it ends on a cliff hanger, I don’t know if I’ll read the sequel.
