Love this author - very similar in style and content to Kate Morton, who is my favourite at the moment. Lottie is an evacuee ward who moves in with a well-off but dysfunctional family in a British seaside town. While technically best friends with the daughter of her age - Celia - they are opposites and end up falling for the same man, who Lottie sleeps with and becomes pregnant to. The second part of the story occurs 40 years later when the art house Arcadia is redeveloped as a trendy bar and hotel, and newly single and new mother Daisy moves to town and learns the secrets of the house. I would have loved more of the original story - Joe and Guy, and the disconnected parents, and what happened to Celia and Guy, but I'm such a sucker for the separate stories becoming intertwined. Lovely writing.
