The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi

4.0

I like Scalzi as a blogger first and a writer second. His writing isn't memorable but the whole setup is supremely interesting. I read the book yesterday, and even though the characters were unique and interesting in their own, none of them carries the book through. This is not science fiction of larger than life characters, this is science fiction of ideas.

What happens when an empire is under a threat that it can't escape from? What happens when a person is given the responsibility they were not ready for? What happens when ambition becomes the only absolute and nothing can stand in its way? The book answers these questions and creates scenarios that are believable and rooted in reality.

But if you are looking for something fantastic and unbelievable, pick the next book. But if you want space opera drama, dig into this one.
